The hands-free crutch for ankle injuries
The iWALK 3.0 is a revolutionary alternative to crutches. Crutches take away three of your four limbs – the iWALK hands-free crutch gives them all back!
If you could walk reasonably well, absolutely unassisted, prior to your ankle injury then the iWALK 3.0 can restore your mobility. Make sure however, that the iWALK is a suitable alternative to crutches for you.
With an iWALK 3.0 as your crutch alternative, you don’t have to adjust your lifestyle for weeks or months as your injury heals. Instead you can get back to a normal daily routine – going to work, shopping, playing with the kids, exercising, you can live the lifestyle you did before your injury.
The iWALK is suitable for ankle sprains, broken or fractured ankles, and recovering from ankle replacement surgery.
Broken or Fractured Ankle
RECOVERY TIME: Several weeks to several months, depending upon the severity of the broken ankle and how completely you give the fractured ankle to heal before allowing the injured lower leg to bear weight and activity. Pain often stops before the broken bone heals enough to resume normal activity.
WHAT TO EXPECT: Broken ankles are typically accompanied by swelling, tenderness, bruising, and/or deformity of the ankle.
UNTREATED BROKEN ANKLE: Not properly treating a fractured bone will prevent the bone from healing the break. It highly increases the chance of a repeat injury and increases the chance of surgery being needed to fix the fractured foot or fractured ankle.
CLOSE CONTACT CASTING: You may be part of a trial of this technique, called the FAME trial, and we have had the following reassurance via a customer that the iWALK 3.0 is suitable for patients being treated by this technique
“We are happy to inform you that both the hands-free crutches and the kneeling scooter are acceptable to use with a close contact cast. As you kneel on these mobility aides, most of the force will travel through your knee and up toward your hip. Even though there will be some pressure on your shin, there will only be a small amount of force that travels down towards your ankle and this will not cause your fracture to move or affect your healing. The cast will be able to tolerate the force also as it has a harder layer of fibreglass surrounding it.
If you do decide to use either of these mobility aids, please ensure the cast does not start to rub your skin. If you do start to experience any pain around your shin or at the top of the cast, it is important you stop using the mobility aide and contact the trauma team for advice and a possible clinical review.”
Sprained Ankle
RECOVERY TIME: Sprained ankles can take anywhere from 2 weeks to a few months of healing before the sprain heals and the ankle regains previous range of motion, strength, and flexibility.
WHAT TO EXPECT: Pain, swelling, stiffness, and instability of the sprained ankle.
UNTREATED SPRAIN: Untreated sprained ankles, or allowing the sprain to become weight bearing before the ankle sprain is fully healed can result in chronic pain and instability.
